"Voices Emerging Along High Tension Wires"

Performed for the first time in 1981,“Piano Mechanics” is an early experimental composition for piano by the Canadian artist and composer Gordon Monahan (*1956) that sought to explore “the acoustical properties of the piano”. The first part, a record of a Monahan performance from 1990, dramatises the ghost-like voices that haunt the “grabbed and swept“ piano strings, these “high tension wires”. Monahan's is another composition that demands playback on a responsive audio system.
