The Voice and its Double
The Voice and its Double

“Spirit Level” is an installation series with spirit level, theremin, amp and speakers (2003–07) produced by the Zurich-based French artist Colin Guillemet (*1979). A spirit level, lying absolutely flat on an unfinished plinth, is repurposed as the antennae of a hidden theremin. As the viewer approaches, the sound begins and its pitch rises. The sound brings sudden life to a visual scenario that is more often associated with the interior of an empty art gallery, recalls the historical use of the theremin as a spectral signifier in early film and insinuates a sly analogy to the gallery visitor’s own “spirit level”.
