In his composition “Die Bleistiftzeichnung” (“The Pen Drawing”, 2009) documented here in performance in Switzerland, the Swiss pianist Werner Bärtschi (*1950) explores the further reaches of song and its vocal accompaniment. The piano music is confronted with a voice recital by the pianist himself – a voice describing a drawing depicting the pen in the process of being drawn. The “speaking pianist” raps around the reduced piano lines.
